Italy, above all. Yes, but which Italy? If tourism of the year 2020 was almost entirely channeled within national borders, which regions benefited most from it? To give an answer, the report Italy Digital Destination, compiled by The Data Appeal Company based on 21.4 million reviews on the tourist offer of the beautiful country. Analysis that, every year, translates into prizes to the most popular Italian regions online: those of the 2020 edition, the fifth, were assigned today in Rimini during the TTG Travel Experience, the most important B2B tourism fair in Italy.

The Data Appeal Company collected, monitored and analyzed big data related to 21.4 million content published onlinecome on 470 thousand points of interest in the accommodation, bars and restaurants, attractions and short-term rentals sectors, in the period from September 2019 to August 2020. And the backlash due to the Covid epidemic clearly emerges from the data: mean decrease is 68% in the last six monthsthe. Given the very strong correlation between online content and tourist flows, this figure confirms that in 2020 about 2 out of 3 tourists were missing.

Italy Digital Destination: the analysis on 2020

The cities of art and urban destinations in general, which suffered most from the absence of foreigners, were the ones who paid the most. On the other hand, bathing destinations held up, closing the season by limiting losses. And there is no shortage of surprises on the positioning of the regions in the various categories of approval, due to the changes in balance and tourist flows brought about by the spread of the virus.

Precisely to take this important variable into account, this 2020 edition of Italy Digital Destination has introduced three new awards: region with the highest Covid Safety Index (The Data Appeal Company index which measures travelers' perception of anti-Covid measures adopted by hotels, restaurants and attractions); region with the best OTA strategy (acronym for Online Travel Agencies, in practice the portals for comparison and booking of tourist offers) in response to Covid and the region with the most growing reputation.
