THE GALLERY, ACTIVE SINCE 2015, MOVES TO THE LOCATION A FEW DISTANT VIA DEI LATINI 27, DOUBLING ITS SPACE AND ITS COMMITMENT TO THE VISUAL ARTS AND PHOTOGRAPHY. THE FOUNDER AND DIRECTOR NICCOLÒ FANO TALKED ABOUT IT.

New year, new headquarters for Matter preparing to move to via dei Latini 27, in Rome. The gallery, which opened in 2015 in via Tiburtina 149 (a few minutes walk from the future destination), has developed solo exhibitions related to the contemporary with a particular focus on photography. He promoted and supported the work of a select group of artists, almost all Italian - Fabio Barile, Stefano Canto, Xiaoyi Chen, Mario Cresci, Giuseppe De Mattia, Marta Mancini is Giulia Marchi - with the aim of taking it beyond national borders, through participation in Italian and international fairs. With the move to the new space, the gallery's guiding line continues unchanged, but with renewed strength and determination.

MATÈRIA: THE NEW HEADQUARTERS OF THE ROME GALLERY

But what is the actual change from the headquarters in via Tiburtina 149 to the new space in via dei Latini 27? "The new space is much larger (almost double) and thanks to the square footage gained we will have the opportunity to host the work group that has built around the gallery in our offices over the years.”Explains the founder and director of Matèria Niccolò Fano to Artribune. "We are preparing to structure a program designed to enhance the potential of the space, those of our city and the neighborhood that hosts us. The goal is to strengthen the rigorous path of the personal exhibitions dedicated to our represented artists - a group that will most likely see new members in the next two years - by adding to the exhibition calendar an educational proposal aimed at professional training in the artistic and cultural sector. Finally we can devote more space to events of a critical and cultural nature ”.

THE RELAUNCH OF THE MATÈRIA GALLERY IN ROME

A significant change, also contextualized in the difficult historical time we are still experiencing: "the state of crisis puts us in front of forced choices which, once undertaken, strongly mark the progress and future of a gallery; the step we take today radically defines our future. Changing space and seizing an opportunity in this stormy sea allows us to formalize a renewed line of thought and action, which strongly focuses on the city, without neglecting a selection of national and international collaborations that we intend to build and consolidate in the coming years.". And he concludes, giving us some anticipation on the planning of the new year, in which we will not only find exhibitions in the gallery. "Pillow Talk Platform will be the first project to directly benefit from this opening, effectively finding a physical location with dedicated equipment from which to record and from which to offer a program of live sessions, aimed at direct interaction with the public.".

MATÈRIA: IT OPENS WITH THE STEFANO CANTO EXHIBITION

The first appointment in the new headquarters in Matèria will be in February - hoping that the restrictive rules do not constitute an excessive obstacle - with the artist's personal exhibition Stefano Canto (Rome, 1974), edited by Giuliana Benassi, entitled Caries. A term borrowed from the botanical vocabulary that refers to the decomposition of plant tissues due to the action of fungal parasites, called “caries”. The works are conceived, in fact, starting from trunks and pieces of bark of trees collected on the edge of the city, all decayed and emptied inside due to the putrefaction caused by wood decay. The artist responds to the deterioration of the organic material by intervening by approaching the deteriorated tree masses, through cementitious grafts and filling the cavities with architectural constructions: a sculptural action, a "constructive presence where there is absence". "The exhibition space seems to be transformed into a landscape, a landscape that is not idyllic, but punctuated by the constant dialogic parrhesia between nature and architecture, where one takes inspiration from the other and vice versa.”, Underlines the curator. The exhibition will be accompanied by a volume created for the occasion together with the designer and curator Fiorenza Pinna, the second editorial product resulting from the long-term collaboration between the two artists.
