The main entrance routes to the city of Orvieto are the Umbrian-Casentino SS 71, the “road to the station” which leads to Piazza Cahen and where, along the way, the now demolished Porta Cassia was located. Another “entrance” to the city is from the Strada delle Conce which leads to the majestic Porta Romana (more recently built on the remains of the ancient Etruscan Porta Pertusa) and passes in front of Porta Maggiore where via della Cava ends. Porta Maggiore was probably the most important and ancient access road to the city in both Etruscan and medieval times. Another access road to the city, now used only for little local traffic and mainly for walking, is Porta Rocca (or Soliana or Postierla) which is located near the walls of the Albornoz fortress.

How to get to Orvieto
Orvieto is happily located in the south-eastern part of Umbria, on the border with upper Lazio (province of Viterbo) and lower Tuscany (provinces of Grosseto and Siena). The city is well served by both the railway and the motorway network. The railway station is located on the line that leads from Rome to Milan, passing through important cities such as Florence, Arezzo and Bologna. Located in front of the railway station is the bus stop area for buses (Busitalia and Cotral), where there are rides available both for local transport and for connections with neighboring countries. Also in this square is the funicular.
The latter is today a modern and rapid means of communication between Orvieto Scalo and Orvieto Centro. It is a means of transport with mechanical operation that has replaced the old funicular (by Giacomo Bracci and designed by an illustrious Orvietan Adolfo Cozza) which was driven by an ingenious hydraulic operation.

The other main towns of Umbria, such as Perugia, Assisi, Gubbio, Spoleto, Terni, can be reached with this E 45 highway. Finally, another communication route with which you arrive in Orvieto is the Cassia state road (from Viterbo-Rome ) which descends from Buonviaggio-Villanova with a particularly scenic route along which there is also an equipped rest stop called "the Belvedere of Orvieto"
